November 7 to December 16
Well what a time we had. There are far too many enjoyments to even attempt to get them all in. We visited ‘wine valley’, and beaches, and towns, and cities. From the ‘ranch’ in the middle of nowhere, to the lovely city of La Paz with 250,000 people in it ( and an amazing Malecon). Malecon is the area by the water for a town or city. We visited Churches that were literally a few hundred years old, to Cabo which is modern and overrun with tourists. We ate spectacularly from home made tacos to michelin star restaurants. And then there are the beaches…. Except for the whole,losing a mirror on the rig thing, we would go again in a heartbeat. And with a better rig for the roads, we will certainly go again. We are so happy we took the chance. Baja Amigos was there supporting us all the way. If anyone is wondering about going on a caravan trip with them, rest assured, you’re in good hands. Lets look at some pictures and enjoy the journey!!!!
An Accident
During our time there we had an accident. It was bound to happen. At one point I was almost determined to turn back. My drivers mirror had been tapped by passing Semis in the opposite direction. At points the road was very narrow. There was maybe 8′ between the lines. That is also the width of the motorhome, plus the mirror!!! Finally, on a blind corner, having been warned of an oncoming semi, my mirror was completely ripped off. The wagonmaster came back and helped us out. The green angels showed up. They are people who travel back and forth on the highways to help people in distress. No charge for their service but tips are welcome. The police showed up and even the national guard showed up. On the side of the mountain we pulled out our trusty Starlink and made a wifi call to insurance. We had had no cell service basically since leaving the US. I removed the mirror and eventually set up a camera to act as mirror. It’s an adventure we were on…
Santispec Beach
Our most lasting memory has to be the time we spent at Santispec beach. Its just off the main highway, so you do have some road noise. We parked in between palapas which are little roofed areas to stay in the shade. Our front bumper stood at the edge of the beach. The water is maybe 50′ away. This is located in concepcion bay so it is protected from any storms or big waves from the Sea of Cortez. Its a sandy beach and you walk right in and can swim. We didn’t have to get used to the water because its so nice. Day temperatures are moderate and t-shirt is all thats needed. We visited in November and again in early December. We stayed twice at this beach for a total of 9 days. There are no hookups and we didn’t have enough battery and solar to carry us through the nights. It just means we have to be more prepared if we ever return; we managed. Lets look at some pictures….
Conclusions:
Did we love it? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! Was it worth it? Absolutely!!!! Would we go again? Not with our current rig(the road size and accident). Would we go again on a caravan tour? Not necessarily. We know the parts we love and the places we would like to stay. With Baja Amigos they have the option to go down on one tour and come back on another, say a month later. That does have to be pre arranged though. Was it expensive? Gas is more than in Canada, food is probably cheaper, the caravan cost covered many meals, most touring excursions, and all camping fees. Did we feel safe there? Yes, we had no issues about security. Yes there are military check points. They are no problem really. Only at nights would I be concerned for walking the dog outside a campground. All the beaches were great. The free beach at Tecolate you had to be more diligent about security. Other than that we were fine!!! There are two favourites for us. The one is obviously Santispec and the other would be by La Paz. We stayed at a campground there that was full hookups, had a pool and hot tub, was fully fenced, and had a quaint little restaurant at the edge. La Paz is a city of 250,000 people. For shopping there is walmart and costco if you don’t want to do the local stuff. Do we recommend Baja Amigos, the caravan company we used? ABSOLUTELY!!!!! We were so well taken care of.
